Donate your car scams |
I want to go over a few of the scams that go on in the "Donate your car for a tax deduction." I'm going to give you a run down on how this works. This is how most companies do it; 1 They find a charity that will appeal to the public. 2 Then they build a website to obtain donated cars and trucks. 3 Once they do this they advertise for junk buyers to join them. Their goal is to get companies in every city and state in North America. 4 The companies then make contracts with each towing operator to pay them for each car lead. The payment for each of these leads can be anywhere from $50-250.00. 5 The charity ends up getting 1% of what the junk buyers pay for the leads. 6 You are given a receipt usually for the bluebook value of the vehicle. But the IRS will not let you take off more then $500.00 from your taxes, unless the donated vehicle is run through an auction and can be shown that it sold for more then $500.00. These companies never give you any information about this, nor do they tell you. I personally feel like this is wrong. The people that are donating their cars are doing it to help a local charity but in fact the charity is not much at all. I have a feeling that this will be outlawed in the near future.
